A Prayer God Never Ignores
One prayer God never ignores — and it isn't the polished one. What Jesus said about the man who couldn't lift his eyes.
Luke 18
Jesus told a story about two men who went to the temple to pray. One, a religious leader, thanked God loudly that he wasn't like other men — sinners, cheats, the tax collector standing nearby. The other, the tax collector, wouldn't even lift his eyes to heaven. He struck his chest and said only: "God, have mercy on me, a sinner!"
What actually happened
Jesus said the tax collector — not the impressive one — went home justified before God. Not because his life was cleaner. It wasn't. But because he came with nothing to offer except the truth about himself, and asked for mercy instead of credit.
The religious leader's prayer was really a résumé. The tax collector's prayer was a confession. One was performing for an audience. The other was speaking to God.
What this still says to us
It's tempting to think God is listening for the right words, the practiced phrases, the prayer that sounds like it belongs in front of other people. This story says the opposite. God isn't scoring your vocabulary. He's listening for honesty. You don't need a polished prayer to be heard — you need a true one. The simplest, most broken sentence you've ever prayed may be the one that reached Him fastest.
Lord, I don't want to perform for You — I want to actually talk to You. Here's the truth about where I am today, without dressing it up. Meet me in it the way You met that man at the back of the temple. In Jesus name, amen.
